Postcard Review by Caroline Russell-King
Show – New York New York a Broadway Revue
Playwright/Composer – Various, not listed. I hope the rights were secured for performance.
Production Company/Theatre space – 42nd Street Productions (semi-professional) / Evan Hazell Theatre, Seton YMCA.
Length – 2 Act (2 hours, 20 minutes, one intermission)
Genre/s – Musical tribute to Broadway concert. I knew all of the pieces, but I didn’t know which musicals they all came from.
Premise – A song and dance celebration of popular songs from musicals
Why this play? Why now? – A recognizable name and crowd pleaser.
Curiosities – I wondered if future programming would focus on concerts, or musicals. The latter, I hope.
Notable Moment – The songs from Six, Chicago, and Footloose were my favourite. I also love a great tap number.
Notable writing – The songs are all well known. There is no overriding narrative that links them, as with a jukebox musical.
Notable performances – Kevin Aichele had the most solos, followed by Selena Fisher and Michelle Rawlings. These three adults carried most of the solos, duets, and trios. These are the seniors of the troupe and set a good example to the young performers. Some of the younger singers had more chutzpah than singing talent. These were alternated with dance numbers which were the most fun. The dancer/chorus was comprised of four males: Dex Drewitz, Parker Sinclair (who was in Footloose), Kaelin Good, and Dylan Sweet. The 15 females in the troupe were all very good. The numbers were tight and the live band was excellent.
Notable design/Production – The set was a flight of lit stairs and on the landing above was space for a 10-piece band.
Notable direction – I assume Artistic Director Scott Derwitz directed, choreographed, and set designed because he did Footloose The Musical, but I don’t actually know since I couldn’t access the QR code and the website didn’t have a program, nor were there any hard copies made available.
One reason to see this show – A very enjoyable evening
